The Sacrament of Confirmation

"Very early, the better to signify the gift of the Holy Spirit, an anointing with perfumed oil (chrism) was added to the laying on of hands. This anointing highlights the name 'Christian,' which means 'anointed' and derives from that of Christ himself whom God 'anointed with the Holy Spirit.'(Acts 10:38) This rite of anointing has continued ever since, in both East and West. For this reason the Eastern Churches call this sacrament Chrismation, anointing with chrism, or myron which means 'chrism.' In the West, the term Confirmation suggests that this sacrament both confirms and strengthens baptismal grace." ~Catechism of the Catholic Church - 1289

Confirmation for Youth at Holy Name of Jesus:

Preparation of youth for the sacrament of Confirmation is a two year process, typically completed as a parish based faith formation program in Grades 9 and 10.

Confirmation preparation at Holy Name of Jesus both invites candidates to explore their personal faith and prepares them for full initiation into the faith life of our community of faith. The program parallels, but does not replace, our HNOJ Youth Ministry programs. The parish community, the Confirmation sponsor and the young person's family share responsibility for Confirmation preparation.

Confirmation Program Goals:

  • To prepare candidates to receive the sacrament of Confirmation;
  • To promote a more intimate union between the candidates and Jesus Christ;
  • To increase the candidates' familiarity with the Holy Spirit;
  • To develop in the candidates a sense of belonging with the parish and the greater Church community;
  • To support the candidates prayer life and desire for the Eucharist and Reconciliation;
  • To promote Christian service among the candidates;
  • To provide candidates with the lifelong tools to help them grow in their faith.

Confirmation Year One Program (typically completed in ninth grade):

Confirmation at Holy Name of Jesus for Adults:

The Adult Confirmation program is for adults or those beyond high school age. Adults wishing to receive Confirmation are encouraged to join the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) program. Click here to learn more.
