VIRTUS: Protecting God's Children for Adults

Upcoming VIRTUS class at Holy Name of Jesus:

  • Saturday, January 21 at 8 a.m. in the Music Room

To view all upcoming training sessions in the Archdiocese, log on to the VIRTUS Website.

All adult volunteers in this Archdiocese who have ongoing contact with children or young people are required to:
  1. Complete a written background check
  2. Attend a VIRTUS: Protecting God's Children for Adults session
These are mandated by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops for volunteers and staff alike to help protect children entrusted to our care. (Read Archbishop Nienstedt's letter on this mandate.) Some examples of church and school volunteers who need to attend a VIRTUS session are:
  • Catechists
  • Preschool Aides
  • Youth Group Leaders
  • Nursery Aides
  • HNOJ School Parent Volunteers
  • Sunday School Teachers
  • VBS Story Tellers
The three-hour VIRTUS session consists of a presentation of printed materials, videos and group discussion. Among other things, VIRTUS attendees will learn to recognize the signs and symptoms that indicate a child is being abused or exploited in some way, environmental factors to be aware of in the physical space of the parish or school, how abusers operate and things parents can do to help educate their children about how to respond to inappropriate behavior toward them.

Background check forms are available to download at the bottom of this page.

To pre-register, please visit the VIRTUS Website. It is very important that you pre-register to make sure your attendance is counted. Pre-registration also allows the Archdiocese to contact you if your session is cancelled. If none of the sessions offered at Holy Name of Jesus work within your schedule, please feel free to choose another session listed on the Virtus website hosted at another parish. There are dozens of other sessions scheduled throughout the Archdiocese, and you may register for any session.

If you would like more information about VIRTUS, please contact Michele Kirchoff via email at mkirchoff@hnoj.org or visit the Archdiocese's website and click on "Protection of Children and Youth Initiative."
