Northwest Hennepin Serra Club

Members of Serra are lay Catholic men and women of all ages and backgrounds who ensure the future of our Church by creating a “culture of vocations.”

The Serra Club of Northwest Hennepin was chartered on May 15, 1991. The Club is a member of SERRAUSA and associated with SERRA INTERNATIONAL. Since Serra International’s founding in 1935 in Seattle, over 500 Serra clubs have been chartered in 30 countries around the world. Today, Serra’s global lay vocations apostolate is made strong by over 12,000 members.

The club meets at St. Bart’s Catholic Church in Wayzata on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. These meetings present continuing education on Catholic theology, thought-provoking programs, and provide time for activity planning.

The Northwest Hennepin club fulfills its mission by coordinating invitation, affirmation, and prayer for priests, deacons, religious, seminarians, and novices in its parishes and area. Through educational programs for its members and raising vocational awareness in families, schools, and parishes, as well as developing a greater understanding of our faith, we strive to fulfill our mission to be the “lay arm of vocations” for the Church.

Come join us and become part of Christ’s mission as we foster, promote, and affirm vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and religious life. Enjoy personal spiritual growth, prayer, and programs that bring joy and lift the spirits of all who participate.

Please contact the parish office to learn more.

Support and Healing

In a community of faith, though you may suffer from loss, pain, or other sufferings, you do not need to suffer alone. Holy Name of Jesus offers many ministries and resources that can help you through your troubles.

In need of prayer? You are never alone. Contact our Holy Name of Jesus Prayer Line now and put the power of prayer to work for you. Email our prayer line. Sick and Homebound

The Eucharist is the Church’s greatest treasure and the source and summit of our life as Catholic Christians. The Communion Outreach ministers serve as a vital bridge between Christ in the Eucharist and our brothers and sisters who are not able to be present with us physically at Mass.

For many years, under the direction and guidance of various staff and volunteers, Holy Name of Jesus has sustained a robust support network known as the BeFriender Ministry or Bread of Life Apostolate. Under its new name, Communion Outreach, this reinvigorated ministry builds upon that sturdy foundation of offering listening, presence, and compassion.

To refer to it as an apostolate rather than simply a ministry emphasizes that those who make visits on behalf of the parish serve as co-workers with the clergy, commissioned with a special task of bringing Holy Communion from Mass to those who hunger for the Lord’s sustenance. Beyond long-term immobility or sickness, other needs that would find support through this outreach include acute illness and recovery from surgery. Our committed volunteers participate in ongoing prayer and formation opportunities, Safe Environment training, and are commissioned as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.

If you are interested in learning how you can help, or if you or someone you know would like a home visit from a priest or minister to the homebound, please call the parish office at 763-745-3491.

Funeral Food Ministry

Be the hands of Christ by providing a meal to bereaved families following a funeral service. Assist with set-up, serving, and clean-up of the catered funeral meal.
This is an on-call ministry. People involved serve on an as-needed basis. Are you interested in serving in this ministry? If so, email Mary Lou Monighan.

Grief

Holy Name of Jesus is here to support you in your time of need. If you need help processing the death of your loved one, here are some options we offer:

  1. If you need spiritual guidance to help process the death of a loved one, contact Fr. Wratkowski 763-473-7901.
  2. If you are feeling desperate or seriously depressed, unable to function or carry on with life, contact your doctor, who may help with medication and recommend a psychologist.
  3. Common reactions to death include shock, sadness, disbelief, and denial. The important thing, say experts, is understanding grief and sharing the pain with others to heal both the body and spirit. You may contact the health care facility or doctor for hospital-sponsored grief counseling, the hospice coordinator, or a community church that offers grief-sharing programs. Holy Name of Jesus Parish is part of the 13 churches that make up the West Suburban Grief Coalition. Initial contact should be made through Harley Feldman at 612-840-1774. You may also go to the internet to find a group closer to where you live.
  4. Call or email the prayer line and ask for others to pray for you.
  5. If you need funeral planning, please call the parish office.

Contact Dennis Hanson for information about the Grief Committee.

Cursillo

An Encounter with Christ

The Cursillo Movement helps people grow closer to Jesus Christ by living a balanced Christian life of piety, spiritual study, and action.

The Cursillo method enables participants to:

  • Expand their prayer life
  • Grow spiritually through ongoing formation in Scripture and Catholic teaching
  • Share God’s Word naturally in the environments where they live and work

The Cursillo Weekend

Cursillo begins with a three-day retreat (Thursday evening through Sunday evening). Clergy and lay leaders present talks and guide small-group discussions on topics such as:

  • The lay person’s role within the Church
  • Grace and the Sacraments
  • Prayer and study of God
  • Christian leadership and living faith in community
  • Bringing Christ to others in daily life
  • Supporting one another in living the Christian life

Participants also pray together, attend daily Mass, and receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. By the end of the weekend, many leave with a renewed relationship with Christ and a clear call to live as disciples in their families, workplaces, and communities.
