Eucharist (Communion)

The Eucharist--instituted by Jesus at the Last Supper--is at the core of our celebration each Mass. Jesus truly becomes the Body and Blood we receive (John 6(link is external): 51-58). At the Last Supper, sharing His Body and Blood with the disciples, Jesus said, "Do this in memory of me"--and so we do, through Holy Communion.

Eucharist is the core of our Catholic faith. Baptized children receiving their First Eucharist are required to have sufficient knowledge combined with thoughtful preparation in order to truly understand the mystery of Christ according to their capacity. First Eucharist is celebrated as part of our Sunday liturgy during the Easter Season.

Eucharist is a faith community event. The family is the core of our faith community, so sacramental preparation needs to take place in the home with the support of the Church. Holy Name of Jesus partners with the parents to help prepare children for the reception of this sacrament. Parents can feel confident that they are fulfilling their responsibilities in preparing their children for First Eucharist if they take the religious education of their children seriously while offering their personal witness of the Eucharistic presence of Jesus. Enthusiastic participation on a weekly basis is one of the best examples a parent can offer their first communicant.

For First Eucharist parents, there is a mandatory information meeting in February 2022.
Parents will choose one date from the two information meetings below.

Session Dates:
Sunday, February 6 from 12 - 1 p.m.
Tuesday, February 8 from 6 - 7 p.m.

PLEASE NOTE: If your child was not baptized at HNOJ, you will need to supply a recent copy of their Baptismal certificate. Information on obtaining a recent copy will be presented at the parent meeting.

At the parent meeting, materials for preparing your child for his or her First Eucharist in the home are provided and explained.  Background regarding the Sacrament is presented.

All children preparing for their First Eucharist in 2022 should plan to attend our First Eucharist Retreat on Saturday, March 12, 2022 from 8:30 a.m. to Noon.  This is the only time this retreat is held!  Please mark your calendar and make plans for your child to attend this retreat.  Children will go from center to center in large groups to experience a tasting of unconsecrated bread and wine, attend a church tour, create a commemorative plate and participate in a guided meditation prayer focused on the Eucharist.  Volunteer opportunities are available for parents who wish to take part in this special day with their children.
*Please note: the structure of this retreat is subject to change for this 2021-2022 year.
