Faith Formation Volunteer Opportunities

Sunday School

Youth or adults (must be 8th grade or older in the 2018-19 school year) are invited to serve with Sunday School students ages 3-kindergarten. Available positions are:

  • Main teachers, weekly
  • Teaching aids, weekly
  • Music coordinator

Wednesday Night Faith Formation

Adults and confirmed teens are invited to serve with Faith Formation students grades first-eighth. Available positions are:

  • Catechists (Teachers)
  • Substitute Catechists (Teachers)
  • Classroom aids
  • Hall monitors
  • Phone receptionist
  • Kitchen help

Requirements: Background check, one-time VIRTUS training, Catechist training for teachers

Vacation Bible School (VBS)

VBS takes place in mid-June. Volunteers, 7th grade and older will find many different ways to be involved:

  • Group leaders
  • Core Team Leaders
  • Bible Story Leads
  • Bible Story Actors
  • Bible Story Stagehands
  • Crafts
  • Prep work
  • Nursery staffing
  • Outdoor Activities and Games
  • Snack Server and Snack Prep
  • Nurse/doctor assistance
  • Photographer
  • Clean-up crew

The VBS Core Team meets in January to determine the year’s theme, select Bible stories, and determine the general direction of VBS. There is an all-volunteer meeting in June. Bible Story Leads and their teams will meet for dress rehearsals also.

Confirmation: Years One and Two

  • Year One, small-group leaders (in teams of two) are needed to plan and conduct eight required small-group sessions in the home from September through December. Groups meet on Sunday or Wednesday evenings for an hour and a half.

  • Year Two, small-group leaders (in teams of two) are needed to facilitate sessions at HNOJ from September through May for approximately two Sunday afternoons per month.

Passion Play

Volunteers are invited to participate in the technical and artistic aspects of the annual Passion Play. The play is put on by first year Confirmation students and occurs each spring. Volunteer ministry positions include:

  • Costumes
  • Lighting and Sound
  • Set Construction
  • Adult support
  • Musicians

Life Teen CORE Team

CORE Team members are adults 20 years and older who work directly with high-school teens in many activities, including:

  • Retreats
  • Life Nights
  • Socials
  • Conferences
  • Bible Study

Youth Ministry Special Events

Adult chaperones, leaders, and drivers are often needed to assist with youth ministry special events such as Luke 18 Retreat, Steubenville Youth Conference, Extreme Faith Camp, and WinterBlast. Requirements: Background check and one-time VIRTUS training may be required depending on event and volunteer position.

Youth Mission Trips

During our two youth mission trips (NPH in Mexico, ChristPower in Minneapolis) adult leaders will lead work teams, activities and small-group discussions.

Requirements: Leaders must be at least 21 years old, complete a background check and one-time VIRTUS training. For NPH, Spanish speaking is preferred.

Summer Stretch

Volunteers in high school and older are invited to participate in this six-week service program for seventh through eighth-grade students. On consecutive Wednesdays in the summer, youth and leaders will worship and serve in the community, as well as participate in fun afternoon activities.

Requirements: Leaders must complete a background check, one-time VIRTUS training, and driving check for drivers.

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA)

Core group facilitators and sponsors are needed to walk with the candidates on this journey. Meet Tuesday evenings October through April with the candidates and catechumen to help them feel welcome and supported. Ministers of hospitality are also needed to help provide refreshments for weekly gatherings and special events. Prayer Partners also needed to pray daily or weekly for the specific intention of an individual.

Special Needs Ministry

  • Drivers are needed to provide transportation to and from weekend Mass for special-needs participants once a month.
  • Volunteers needed to help facilitate breaking open the Sunday Scriptures on faith sharing Sundays once a month.
  • Christmas prayer service, dinner and Santa gift giving needs are:
  • Invitation and confirmation of participation
  • Setup prayer service area
  • Wrap gifts for Christmas party
  • Setup Good Samaritan Center for dinner
  • Plan and cook the dinner meal
  • Serve the dinner
  • Clean up the Good Samaritan Center

Adult Faith Formation Group Facilitators

Volunteer facilitators are invited to lead groups for several different adult faith formation opportunities, the goal of which is to build small Christian communities. Programs include:

  • Christians in Search (Lenten Program)
  • Women’s Wisdom on Wednesdays (WWW)
  • Book Discussions
  • Men’s Community Bible Study

It's a Guy Thing! Men’s Group

Core team members for this men’s group help with:

  • Creating calendar activities for the year
  • Recruiting speakers
  • Hospitality for monthly breakfast meetings
  • Dinner preparation for evening events
  • Hosting/Emceeing an event
  • Publicity/Communication with parish and peers
  • Facility preparation and execution for Annual Cookie Bake

Cana Dinner

Couples are invited to volunteer for this annual marriage celebration occurring around Valentine’s Day. Serve on the planning committee or the day of this fun event. Volunteers are needed for:

  • Planning Committee
  • Serving as host/hostesses
  • Cooking the meal
  • Serving dinner
  • Decorating
  • Giving out prizes
